Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day! 




It's great to be accessible 
Join us in celebrating the 8th Annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day today on Thursday, May 16, 2019, which recognizes the importance of full digital accessibility for all users. Wondering what it's like to be a user facing troubles with digital accessibility? GAAD has pulled together some ideas and suggestions for simulating this experience that are educational and eye-opening for all users. 

 Since 2016, the Coastal Office of Online Learning has been building out one initiative after the other to fully support all users for both academic and non-academic content at the Coastal Carolina University campus, bringing us up to and/or above the AA standard of WCAG 2.1's guidelines.  Some of the areas we've seen grow relating to digital accessibility include:
  • Digital Accessibility Training Workshop
  • Ally Training Workshop (coming soon!)
  • Adoption & Implementation of the Ally Accessibility tool for Moodle LMS
  • Development of training documents and tutorials, as well as accessible templates for syllabi, course content, and even entire course shells in the Basic and Advanced Moodle Templates
  • Closed Captioning Initiative for all academic & non-academic content at CCU
  • Implementation of the ASR function to improve cc'ing in the Echo 360 Lecture Capture Tool
  • One-on-one and departmental trainings on digital accessibility standards

Curation Tools in HE--Listing with List.ly

List.ly, among many popular curation-driven social media platforms, offers what appears to be useful opportunities for teaching and learning. The main plus to utilizing this tool appears to be collaboration opportunities. For example, in a course encouraging students to learn more about instructional design in education, one might assign list.ly and have students search for pre-made lists, and either note these, or append to them to encourage collaboration outside of the traditional or online classroom environment. Collaboration with Social Media in the HE Classroom--2 Use Cases

So let's take a look at 2 potential tool applications relating to the use of SM (social media) in the higher ed classroom.  1. Google Apps--specifically Google Docs. This tool has almost limitless possibilities, and I feel using it for classwide as well as group-driven curation activities is an incredible opportunity to allow students to collaborate without being limited by time and place. Moodle Calendar Block

Using the Moodle Calendar Block                 The calendar tool on Moodle is a great way for students to keep track of assignments and plan their time accordingly. When the Calendar Block is enabled, a month calendar view will show up on the right sidebar within each separate course with due dates color coded by type. When a student hovers over each date, they can follow a link straight to the assignment. They can also use the block to access the big Moodle Calendar that holds dates for every course in which the student is enrolled. Students even have the option to export the Moodle Calendar in order to sync it with their personal online calendars. So how do professors enable the Calendar Block in order to give students all of these wonderful possibilities?
